Before the CNI, there were at least two times when the keys of the Great Captain, Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, were cryptanalyzed.. You can see one of them at the following link.
It was in Spain that the first Enigma machines were tested in a wartime setting. The Nationalist army had two high-level encrypted communications networks using Enigma machines, each with its own cabling. To see more, click on the link.

Classical cryptography is based on simple concepts that are still used in modern cryptography: substitution and transposition. However, there is a wide variety of methods that combine these concepts to create ciphers that can be very difficult to break.
