He was born in Calatayud on July 28, 1897, into a family of intellectuals of the era. By the age of
21, he was already a professor of Mechanics at the University of Zaragoza, serving as Dean of the
Faculty of Science there until 1945, when he was appointed Vice-Rector. His work in the
Cryptanalysis Unit of the V Army Corps was highly meritorious; he succeeded in breaking more
than forty ciphers, including some of great complexity. After the war, he continued his teaching
career and was appointed a professor at the CSIC in 1949. He authored several books on
mathematics and mechanics, though, regrettably, he wrote nothing on cryptology. He died in
Zaragoza on November 16, 1983.
